A cold forest is a name given to lands covered with dense forest and mixed vegetation, usually in cold climates. The application of the term has significantly evolved over the past centuries. Before the 1970s, coniferous forests were often called cold forests, but this terminology is now out of use.
Because cold jungles occur on all inhabited landmasses and can contain much vegetation and terrain types in different climatic zones, the wildlife of cold forests cannot be directly identified.
One of the most basic definitions of the cold forest is land overgrown with mixed vegetation at ground level, especially in cold regions. Typically, such vegetation is dense enough to prevent people from moving and requires travelers to block their way. This definition makes a distinction between rainforests and cold forests because the lower part of the rainforest is typically open to vegetation due to the lack of sunlight, and thus its passage is relatively favorable. Forests can be found within or on the borders of cold forests in areas where woodland has been cleared by natural disturbances such as hurricanes or by human activities such as logging. The successive vegetation that occurs after such irritation is dense and mixed and is a 'typical' forest. Forest also forms along rainforest edges such as stream banks once again due to more available light at ground level.
Monsoon forests and mangroves are often referred to as such forests. Monsoon forests, which have a more open canopy than rainforests, typically have dense lower floors with lots of vines and shrubs that make it challenging to move around, while the support roots and low tops of mangroves pose similar challenges.
Because European explorers initially traversed the jungles primarily by riverine, the dense, tangled vegetation that covered stream banks gave the misleading impression that such cold forest conditions lived throughout the entire forest. As a result, it was wrongly presumed that the entire forest was an impenetrable cold forest. This, in turn, seems to have pointed to the second widespread use of the cruel forest as almost any moist tropical forest. Cold forest in this context is mainly associated with terrestrial rainforest but can extend to cloud forests, temperate rainforests, and mangroves without reference to vegetation structure or ease of travel.
