Mountain is the name given to landmasses that are higher than the surrounding terrestrial areas. The adjective "mountainous" is used to describe regions covered and associated with mountains.

There are many mountains in the world, and the reason for their emergence is different. While the Earth's compression forms some hills, some mountains are created by the freezing of lava. The source of volcanoes' lava is a boiling mass called magma.

Mountains are often formed from fractures, bends, or volcanic eruptions. For this reason, they are also called broken mountains, and volcanoes. The mountains formed by the breaking of the parts of the Earth's crust have become very hard and have a fragile feature due to various ground movements (fault slides are such a movement) called "broken mountains."

Not all mountains are only on Earth. Other planets also have mountains. Examples are Mount Gila (3 km) on Venus and Olympus Mons (25 km) on Mars, the highest mountain in the Solar System, which covers almost half of Turkey. The highest peak in the Himalayas Mountains, the highest mountain in the world, is Mount Everest, at 8,850 meters.

Mountains are generally less preferred as human habitats than plains, where the weather is harsher, and there is less agricultural land. At great altitudes, there is less oxygen in the air and less protection against solar radiation UV.

Acute Mountain Sickness, caused by hypoxia (low oxygen in the blood), affects half of the people who live at lower altitudes and spend a few hours at an altitude of more than 3,500 meters.

While some of the mountains scattered around the world can be used in their natural state for logging, mining, and a few are used for all.

Some mountains are just wooded, while some have spectacular peaks that are worth seeing. Peaks can be reached by transitioning from mountain to mountain; height, steepness, flatness, weather, and road conditions affect these transitions. Vehicles made for more accessible transportation, such as cable cars, can be found in the mountains.
