A hamburger is a food round of one or more cooked ground beef patties, usually, beef, encased in a sliced bread roll or bun, typically defined as a snack. Meatballs can also be pan-fried, grilled, or smoked. Hamburgers are usually served with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, bacon or chiles to the taste of the guests; flavors such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, zest or "special sauce", usually a variation of Thousand Island sauce; and often sprinkled on sesame buns. Cheeseburger is also called cheeseburger.

The term 'burger' can also be applied to meat patties alone, or the word can be thought of to ground beef, particularly in the UK, where the word 'patty' is rarely used. Since the term hamburger usually refers to meat, for clarity, a "burger" may be prepared with the meat or meat substitute used, as in a beef burger, turkey burger, or veggie burger. Hamburgers are sold in fast-food restaurants and Michelin-starred places. There are many international and regional varieties of the hamburger.

The origin of the hamburger, which is considered to have originated in the United States and is often attributed to Charlie Nagreen, Frank and Charles Menches, Oscar Weber Bilby, Fletcher Davis, and Louis Lassen, is controversial. White Castle tracks the origin of the hamburger to Hamburg, Germany, with the invention of Otto Kuase. However, in 1904 St. Louis World's Fair achieved national fame when the New York Tribune discovered the hamburger as "a food vendor's novelty on a pike". No objective argument has sufficed to end the dispute over invention. An ABC News article sums it up: "One problem is that there is minimal written history. Another is that the burger spread is largely procured at the World's Fair, from small vendors who come and go. And that's entirely at the same time in different parts of the country. There is a possibility that more than one person may have thought of it."
