The fighting siamese fish (Betta Splendens) is a species of fish belonging to the genus Betta. It is commonly grown in aquariums. If two males are kept in the same aquarium, they will fight to the death, hence the name Brawler siamese fish. It is also known as Betta for short.

The lifespan of betta fish is 2-3 years, rarely 4-5 years. From 6 months, they become adults. Adult bettas are around 5-6 cm in length. There are also bettas called giant bettas that can reach 12 cm in length.

The natural habitat of the fighting siamese fish is shallow and still waters. It is a labyrinth organ that develops depending on its gills, which enables it to live in low-oxygen waters. Thanks to this organ, Betta, which can use the air it receives from outside the water in its gills, can survive for a long time, even in small puddles. However, this situation was later distorted, and an understanding was developed as bettas naturally love small containers and live in micro ponds in nature. It is a wrong thought. Although they are fish that determine the area that takes up space and prefers to live close to the surface, which does not travel much, bettas are fish that want to have enough room for themselves, like all other fish.

They feed on carnivores. In their natural habitats, they mostly survive by consuming mosquito larvae, as well as living things such as maggots and water fleas. Algae and other edible aquatic plants are of no interest. They also feed on the ground, crumbled meat.

The bettas' labyrinth organ has given them the ability to survive for long periods of time in even the smallest puddles. Knowing this, Pet Shop owners usually keep bettas in glass-like containers and sell them. Although the betta can survive in small containers, it should have a 30-liter aquarium volume of at least 30cmx30cm in order to be healthy and contented.
