Flamingo (Phoenicopterus) is the common name given to 6 bird species that make up the Phoenicopterus genus from the flamingogils (Phoenicopteridae) family of the flamingos (Phoenicopteriformes).
It consists of a single genus of flamingo (Phoenicopterus) and six subspecies. However, according to the latest results of biologists, the European species is speciated as the Rosa species and the Cuban species, which has two subspecies since they can reproduce within and cross. Flamingo is known as Alli Crane in Anatolia. It is a pink-colored water bird.
Flamingos have long, slender legs, a long, curved neck and rose-colored plumage. One of its distinctive features is its curved beak, which acts as a filter when dipping food with its upper part and removing food from water or mud. The red color tones in their feathers vary according to the amount of carotene in the food they eat. Young birds in captivity have white plumage as they receive very little carotene-containing food.
Flamingos are found in Africa, Southwest and Central Asia, Southern Europe, and South and Central America. In southern Spain and southern France, rosa flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), the most significant and most common type of bird, is seen at hatching time. This species is 130 cm tall and lives in Africa, Asia, and Southern Europe. On the Dutch border of Germany, a colony of various flamingo species lives, which is the northernmost colony in the world.
Flamingos live in large groups in lakes, salt lakes, or lagoons with stagnant water. They come to places where other animal species are scarce and where extraordinary natural conditions exist. Examples include salt lakes or lakes with alkaline content. In short, this bird species lives in salty and soda shallow waters. Apart from these, they can also bear the situations where the temperature difference shows extremes. The best-observed place in our country is Acıgöl, where Denizli/Çardak airport is located. In the environment where flamingos are found, the number of individuals in bird groups can reach 1 million.
Flamingos generally eat arthropod animals such as crabs, shrimp, artemia, ant larvae, and algae. Thanks to their downward curved beak, flamingos can get food out of their very harsh environment.
