Volcanoes or volcanic mountains are geographical landforms where magma (molten rock found in the Earth's inner layers, molten at high pressure and high temperature) erupts from the surface of the Earth. Although there are many volcanoes on rocky planets and moons in the Solar System, this phenomenon is usually seen at tectonic plate boundaries, at least on Earth. However, there are notable exceptions to hotspot volcanoes. The branch of science that studies volcanoes is called volcanology.
Volcanoes are usually located at either tectonic plate boundaries or hot spots. Volcanoes can be dormant or active, and they can still change surprisingly. Volcanoes on land often take the form of cones or cinder cones, with eruptions continually accumulating over the years. Underwater volcanoes often form extremely steep pillars, and over the years, they rise to the ocean's surface and become new islets. Volcanic events are often accompanied by ground events such as earthquakes, hot springs, mud pots, and springs. Low-intensity earthquakes often precede eruptions.
Surprisingly, volcanologists have not reached a consensus on the classification of active volcanoes. The lifespan of a volcano can range from a few months to several million years. Making such a classification may seem meaningless given the longevity of humans and sometimes even civilizations. For example, many of the Earth's volcanoes have erupted many times over the past few millennia but are currently inactive. Considering the longevity of such volcanoes, it can be said that they are very active. However, considering our lifetimes, they are asleep. Further complicating this definition are volcanoes that are active but not erupting. Are these volcanoes active?
Scientists generally consider volcanoes erupting or showing activity, such as new outgassing or unexpected earthquake activity, to be active. Many scientists agree that volcanoes known to have erupted in recorded history were also involved. It should be kept in mind that written history differs from region to region, for example going back 3,000 years in the Mediterranean, 300 years on the Pacific coast of the USA, and 200 years in Hawaii.
Sleeping volcanoes are volcanoes that are currently inactive but are likely to erupt or erupt at any moment.
