Mango is the fleshy fruit of tropical and subtropical trees belonging to the genus Mangifera of the Anacardiaceae family. This fruit has spread to the world from its homeland, India.

In addition to locally grown species such as M. foetida, which is called horse mango, Mangifera indica – known as mango or Indian mango- is the only species globally that is widely grown and distributed worldwide in many tropical, subtropical regions. In some cultures, Mangifera fruits are used to decorate weddings, public celebrations, and religious rites.

Mangoes have been cultivated in South Asia for thousands of years and reached East Asia in the 4th and 5th centuries BC. It began to be cultivated in East Africa in the 10th century AD. The 14th-century Moroccan traveler, Ibn Battuta, mentioned this during his visit to Mogadishu. It was later grown in Brazil, the West Indies, and Mexico, where the climate allowed it to grow.

Mango is mostly grown in frost-free, tropical, and temperate, subtropical climates. One-third of the world's mangoes are grown only in India. Secondly, China comes next.

Mangoes are also grown in the Andalusia region of Spain (mainly in the province of Málaga) from a few places on the European continent to produce tropical plants and fruits. More than 1,000 mango varieties are easily cultivated on grafted seedlings.

Mangoes can be widely used in the kitchen, sour, unripe mangoes can be used in spicy chutneys called chutney, in mango brine in "athanu," in appetizers, or eaten raw with hot pepper or soy sauce, salt. It is made from mango in southern Asia, where it is produced by a drink called panna or panha as a refreshing summer drink. Mango jelly named mamidi thandralu made from mango pulp, is very popular in Telugu and Tamil as ambazha vettu. Dhal, which is made with peas, lentils, and beans, is accompanied by cooked mangoes served with cooked rice and green peppers and clarified butter to make mamidikaya pappu in Telugu and mangai paruppu in Tamil.
