Hyenas are a family of carnivores. And felines of the genus Feliformia, despite their resemblance to the hyenas. Today's hyenas are common in Africa and in southern and western Asia. They are known as scavengers.
Hyenas are an ancient family of mammals. Fossils of extinct species are more common than hyena species living today. The earliest identified hyena is Protictitherium, whose fossils from the Miocene have been found. This breed is actually considered to be the ancestor of hyenas, although it looks more like civets and lives in trees. At a later time, a genus called Plioviverrops also lived in Europe. This small genus of hyenas fed on insects. The main hyenas and ground wolves are considered to have separated during this period.
Then more prominent and more significant species of hyenas appeared. At the end of the Miocene, the coyote-like genus Ictitherium spread all over Eurasia, large scavengers such as the genus Adcrocuta, hunting hyenas such as the genus Lycyaena and Hyaenictis, and even the genus Chasmaporthetes, which spread as far as North America, emerged. These ancient breeds of hyenas are thought to be extinct, as canines became more widespread and more successful than hyenas during the Pliocene epoch. Today, only four hyena species have survived.
The most important common feature of hyenas is that their front legs are longer than their hind legs. They do not have the ability to retract their nails like felines.
