The Dutch founded the city of New York in 1615 under the name New Amsterdam. The city passed to the United Kingdom in 1664 and was renamed New York. In 1778, the city became the capital of the newly founded United States for two years. After the capital was moved to Washington, the importance of the town continued to grow. The first European visit to the location of New York was in 1524.

The inaugural of the New York City Subway in 1904 brought the new city together. In the first half of the 20th century, New York City became the world's commerce, industry, and communications center.

In 1916, New York City was the city with the largest urban African diaspora in North America. New York City overtook London in the 1920s to become the most populous city, and the Metropolitan Area became the first megacity in human history to surpass 10 million in the early 1930s.
