Indian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is an aquatic plant species belonging to the Nelumbonaceae family. The Indian lotus is cultivated for both ornamental and food purposes in a wide area from present-day Vietnam to Afghanistan. It is the national blossom of India and Vietnam. In ancient Egypt, this plant species was unknown, later introduced into this country at the time of Persian invasions. The ancient Egyptians believed in the blue lotus, or Nymphaea caerulea, also known as the "blue lotus" and the "sacred lotus" flower, as the sacred flower.

Lotus rhizomes are used in Asian cuisine, especially in Chinese and Japanese cuisines.
