River is the general name given to large streams, especially in terms of width and amount of water, which usually pour into seas, lakes, or other large streams. Dams have ruptured two-thirds of the world's major rivers. Dams trap one-sixth, or 7,000 cubic kilometers, of water flowing from rivers.

The rivers ensure the survival of the fish population in the seas. Because of the nutrients carried by the rivers to the sea, 80 percent of the fish caught in the world come from the continental shelf.

Rivers unite us. About 276 rivers flow through the territory of more than one country, and their basins cover almost half of the world's land surface.

Rivers perform essential tasks such as providing water to people and regulating the ecosystem in the places they pass through. Rivers are estimated to be 10-15 times more valuable per hectare than land and sea-based ecosystems.
