In the visual arts, a cityscape represents the physical aspects of a city or urban area through an artistic design such as painting or photography. It is the word for the urban equivalent of a landscape. Urban landscape can mean roughly the same as urban landscape, even though implicitly in the difference between the words city and town expresses the same difference in urban size, density, and even modernity. In urban design, terms imply the configuration of built forms and interspaces.

By the late 17th century, cityscapes became an independent art form in the Netherlands. The 18th century was a period of renaissance for cityscape painting in Venice (Canaletto, Guardi).

At the end of the 19th century, business enthusiasts began to pay more attention to the atmosphere and dynamics of daily life in the city and to give direction to their art accordingly. Suburban and industrial areas, construction sites, and railways were also beginning to find their place in the city landscape. In the 20th century, attention was focused on abstract and conceptual art, and therefore the amount of artistic production of cityscapes began to decrease. Faithful to figurative painting, American painter Edward Hopper made the intriguing designs of the American stage into art history. With the revival of figurative art at the end of the 20th century, it seems that the cityscape became a favorite again. Well-known cityscape painters are such famous artists as Rackstraw Downes, Antonio López García, and Richard Estes. American artist Yvonne Jacquette succeeded in producing much more advanced works on aerial cityscapes than her colleagues.
