Grasshopper is the general name given to the leaping members of the suborder Caelifera from the order Orthoptera.
In Anatolia, grasshoppers live in sizes ranging from 4-5 cm, depending on their species. The smallest known grasshopper species is 2 cm, and the largest grasshoppers detected so far are up to 20 cm in length. The migratory grasshopper species are 5-10 cm larger than the others.
Locusts cause significant damage to agriculture, especially near hot deserts (regions around the Mediterranean, central North America, and Argentina, areas close to the deserts of Asia and Africa). The areas damaged by grasshoppers in Turkey are Southern Anatolia and Thrace. Locusts are famous for their terrifying migrations to richly vegetated lands. The wingless grasshopper young attack the plants in large groups, which hatch from the eggs laid in clusters immediately after the first rains. When the young mature and take wings, the rate of migration increases even more: the locust swarm, migrating like a black cloud, eats and consumes the plants where they land in a short time. At the end of the hot season, females lay eggs where they are; then, the adults die in large groups, and this time their corpses cause diseases.
The fight against locusts varies depending on various factors: the size of the locust swarm, the mode of migration, whether the individuals forming the swarm are adults or not.
