Bran Castle is a national monument and border insignia located near Bran and in the immediate vicinity of Braşov in Romania. The first documents about Bran Castle are seen by Louis I on November 19, 1377, when he allowed the Braşov Saxons to build a stone castle at their own expense and labor. Between 1438 and 1442, the castle was defended against the Ottoman Empire, and later it was used as a customs for the mountain passing between Erdel and Wallachia. In 1920, Bran Castle became the official residence of the Kingdom of Romania. It became Queen Marie's favorite place and retreat. The castle was inherited by his daughter Princess Ileana and was taken over by the communist regime in 1948 with the expulsion of the royal family.

In 2005, the Romanian government enacted a special law on the return of property seized by force. Thus, a year later, Bran Castle was given to Princess Ileana's son and heir, Dominic von Habsburg.
