Vultures are social birds and are frequently thought of as a single unit, but the name given to a group of vultures depends on what they are doing at any given moment in time.
Many other species of birds, including vultures, are capable of singing, but New World vultures are unable to do so. They are only allowed to make simple sounds like grunts and hisses as a form of communication. The vast majority of the time, black vultures are completely silent. They make grunting noises that can sound like hungry pigs or dogs barking in the distance, along with raspy, drawn-out hissing sounds while feeding and fighting. Additionally, they make sounds that are similar to hissing. Vultures that are courting each other may make a yapping sound. When they are hungry, nestlings make low hisses or coughs, and the adults at the nest will occasionally make creaky coos that sound like pigeons.
