Sea lions are marine mammals that belong to the suborder Pinnipedia and are found in the ocean. They are members of the Otariidae family, which also includes fur seals, and are referred to collectively as eared seals. Even though there are seven different species of sea lions across the globe, they are all considered to belong to the same family.

When they are in the water with their heads above the surface, California sea lions produce a great many more calls than when they are on land. A few of these calls are carried by the wind and end up in the water. Sea lions are able to produce calls even when they are on land, in their terrestrial rookeries, away from the water. Males make a lot of noise when they are trying to defend their territory or when they are mating. When they sense that their young are in danger, female sea lions will growl, squeal, belch, and bark. Both the adult females and the young pups are able to identify each other by their unique calls.
