On a warm summer night, the soothing sound of crickets chirping is something that everyone is familiar with. The majority of us, however, are clueless as to the motivation behind their singing summertime songs. It just so happens that there is more than one explanation for the sounds that are produced by these insects.
What mechanisms allow them to produce the sounds?
It's interesting to note that only male crickets are capable of producing these chirping noises. They accomplish this by either rubbing their long hind legs on their wings or by rubbing their wings together. Both of these actions are performed simultaneously. The ribbed texture on the wings amplifies the sound produced. Warmer temperatures also make birds move faster, which makes them chirp more.
