Kingfishers are identifiable by their small size, bright blue and orange plumage, and preference for slow-moving or still bodies of water. They hunt fish from perches along riverbanks and fly quickly and low over the water while doing so. Occasionally, they hover above the water's surface. Kingfishers can be found all over the United Kingdom, particularly in the middle and southern parts of the country. As one travels further north, however, one encounters fewer of these fish. Even though their numbers have gone down in the past century, kingfishers are now moving into new areas in Scotland.

Both male and female Belted Kingfishers are capable of producing loud, mechanized rattles in response to even the smallest amount of disturbance. They have been known to let out screams when they feel threatened, which the males often combine with harsh calls.
