Phasianidae is the family that includes the red junglefowl, which lives in tropical environments. It is the main ancestor of the chicken that is raised in farms, but there is strong evidence that domestic chickens have also crossed with grey junglefowls in the past.
This wild ancestor of the domestic chicken is considerably smaller than its domestic progeny and may be found all over South and Southeast Asia. It has also been introduced as a species in a great number of other locations all over the world. In certain regions of its native and introduced range, it has developed intermediate hybrids through extensive interbreeding with feral chickens and domestic chickens. Both sexes have gray legs as opposed to golden ones, which allows them to be differentiated from wild chickens. Unlike the loud, lively crowing of domestic roosters, the crowing of males in the wild tends to get raspy and muffled as it comes to an end.
