A Hippopotamus, also referred to as a hippo or water horse, is an amphibious ungulate mammal native to Africa. Because hippos enjoy being near water so much, the ancient Greeks referred to them as river horses. Hippos can spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes, which allows them to keep their massive bodies cool despite the intense heat of the African sun.
Hippos are notable for the loud noises they make. Their snorts, grumbles, and wheezes have been measured at 115 decibels, which is approximately the same volume that you would get when you are 15 feet from the speakers at a rock concert. These booming creatures are also capable of communicating through subsonic vocalizations.
