Hoopoes and other members of their family have been around since prehistoric times. In point of fact, the oldest hoopoe fossil has been dated to the Eocene epoch, which occurred between 56 and 33 million years ago. During this time, the first ancestors of horses, deer, rhinoceroses, and other mammals we know today also lived.
The body length of a hoopoe is approximately 29 centimeters, and its wingspan is approximately 46 centimeters. Hoopoes are considered to be birds of medium size. The bird's weight can range anywhere from 50 to 90 grams, depending on the subspecies. The bill of the hoopoe is long and black, with a fawn coloration at the base of the bill. The bird also has broad black and white wings, which give it the ability to be a powerful flier. It also has a distinctive undulating flight pattern, which is similar to that of butterflies. These wings also allow the bird to quickly fly to high altitudes and make tight turns. Both of these things help the bird avoid being eaten by birds like eagles and hawks.
