Deer are very vocal animals, and they express themselves through a wide variety of calls, each of which can be interpreted to mean something different, from a stern warning to a friendly chat. The herd mentality of deer is one of the characteristics that has contributed to their long-term survival. They look out for one another's wellbeing. They achieve this goal in part by sharing information with one another whenever there is a potential for harm. There are a number of different vocalizations that deer use to communicate with one another, including grunts, bellows, bawls, and bleats.
Deer that are suspicious will often stomp their hooves lightly alongside their sniffing behavior. This occurs when they initially have a hunch that there is a threat, but they aren't certain where it is or what it is just yet. When a deer is absolutely certain that there is danger in the area, it will snort. Bucks will assert their superiority over younger deer by grunting loudly. Although all deer make soft, long grunts to communicate with one another, the loud, short grunt that a buck makes is a signal that he is asserting his dominance over the territory and the does that live there.
