A substantial rail, the Purple Swamphen, can be found here. The majority of the top is a dark grayish black color, and it has a wide collar that is dark blue. The bottom ranges from dark blue to purple. The Purple Swamphen has a habit of showing off its white undertail by flicking its tail back and forth while it walks. The legs and feet are an orange-red color, and the bill is deep red and robust in appearance. The Swamphen is able to fly quite well considering its large size, and it will take to the air immediately if it senses that it is in danger. When the animal is in flight, its long legs and elongated toes either trail behind it or hang underneath it. Even though they are strong swimmers, Purple Swamphens spend most of their time foraging along the water's edge, in the reeds, and on floating vegetation.
There are a few different ways that purple swamphens can mate, the most common of which are monogamous mating and communal mating. Communal mating is a method of reproduction in which two or more breeding females share a single nest and are fertilized by a group of males. Aside from the parents, both male and female helpers who don't breed also help raise the young.
