About AI Ocean Life Identifier

Found something on the shore, spotted a whale from a boat, or wondered about a sea slug at the aquarium? Take a photo and this guide app shows up to three closest matches. Matches are an observation reference, and the app never declares a single flat answer.

WHAT IS IN THE GUIDE: 81 SPECIES IN 8 GROUPS
- Whales and dolphins (13): Pacific white-sided dolphin, orca, humpback whale, sperm whale and more
- Sharks and rays (8): blacktip shark, ocellated eagle ray, bluespotted ribbontail ray and more
- Crabs (17): fiddler crab, snow crab, red king crab, horseshoe crabs and more
- Hermit crabs (6): Clibanarius hermit crab, hairy red hermit crab and more
- Starfish (10): crown-of-thorns starfish, blue bat star, cushion star and more
- Sea slugs (8): sea hare relatives, Anna's Chromodoris, Spanish shawl and more
- Sea cucumbers (8): black sea cucumber, leopardfish, flowerfish and more
- Seaweed (11): green laver, bladderwrack, sea lettuce, dulse and more
You can check the full list at any time under "See what this guide knows" inside the app.

PHOTO IDENTIFICATION COVERS THESE 81 ONLY
Anything not on the list cannot be recognised from a photo. In that case the app says "we could not tell" instead of forcing the nearest name. It does not pretend to know what it does not. The sea holds many creatures that are not in this guide.

NO FAKE CONFIDENCE
- Up to three candidates. Never a single flat answer.
- A three-step note shows how close each one looks: very similar, similar, or possibly similar.
- When the AI is unsure, it says so modestly with "possibly similar".
- The same photo always gives the same answer.
- For look-alikes, a "look-alike" card lets you compare close relatives side by side.

READ IT WITHOUT TAKING A PHOTO
The explanations for all 81 species are written for this app: appearance, clues for telling them apart, way of life, trivia and observation hints, each with sources. Sample photos shared under CC0, CC BY or public domain come with the entries.

YOUR FINDS BUILD UP
Photos you take are saved as observation records on the device, and each species you meet for the first time is added to the guide as a discovery. A counter shows how many of the 81 species you have found. A four-choice photo quiz helps you learn the clues while you play.

WHEN YOU MEET SEA LIFE
Some sea creatures have spines, teeth or strong claws, and some are said to be venomous. Do not touch with bare hands; watch from a little distance. Keep well back from whales, dolphins and sharks, and never feed them. Never take protected creatures home without checking local rules, and leave what you find where you found it. This app does not tell you whether something is safe to touch or eat.

NO SERVER, NO RUNNING COST
Identification runs entirely on your device, so there is no server to pay for and no monthly fee. Photos and records stay on this device and are never sent out. There is no account and there are no ads. Location is used only when you choose to add a place to a record, and it is stored on the device only.

PRICE
The app is free. AI identification has no limit for the first 7 days after install, then is free up to 3 times a day (the count resets when the date changes). The quiz is free up to 3 questions a day. All guide text and sample photos stay free to read.
A single one-time purchase of 200 yen (tax included, regional equivalent elsewhere) removes the limits on identification and quiz, and opens the map of where you found things, CSV export of your records, and the detailed photography tips and observation hints. It is not a subscription, nothing renews automatically. When you change phones, use "Restore purchase".

ABOUT THE TRAINING DATA
The recognition AI was trained on 15,670 photos from 2,019 photographers, shared under CC0, CC BY and public domain terms on iNaturalist, Wikimedia Commons and GBIF. The list of photographers is available in the app settings.
