Zoo Animal ID by Photo

Your child pointed through the fence, asked what it was, and the name would not come.
Before you go and read the sign, take one photo. The AI inside the phone offers candidates.

EIGHT SPECIALIST MODELS, ONE PER LOOKALIKE GROUP
African grazers (impala, common eland and others): 17
Monkeys and lemurs of the world (aye-aye, rhesus macaque and others): 22
Wild canids of the world (red fox, African wild dog and others): 18
Mustelids of the world (stoat, wolverine and others): 15
Turtles and tortoises of the world (green sea turtle, Aldabra giant tortoise and others): 15
Squirrel family of the world (American red squirrel, groundhog and others): 14
Japanese wild mammals (badger, wild boar and others): 11
Zoo regulars (hippopotamus, giraffe, koala, gorilla and others): 12
With overlaps removed, 118 species in total. One big model asked to do everything makes more mistakes than several small ones, each raised on a group whose members look alike.

THREE ANSWERS AT MOST, AND SILENCE WHEN UNSURE
At most three candidates, never a single verdict. Each carries one of three words: very similar, similar, or possibly similar. When confidence is short, nothing is offered at all. The same photo returns the same result every time.

TEST WHAT YOU LEARNED, AS A QUIZ
The clues you read in the cards come back as four-choice questions. You can draw the questions from everything, from only the animals you found, or from only the ones you keep getting wrong.
The bus ride home is when it actually sticks.

154 CARDS TO READ
Beyond the 118 the camera can name, the book adds the animals you keep meeting at a zoo, for 154 written cards in all: what to look at, the clues for telling it apart, how it lives, one small fact and a tip for watching. Sources are the Japanese and English Wikipedia. It reads perfectly well without the camera.

WHAT THIS BOOK DOES NOT KNOW
Photograph an animal outside the 118 and it will not be pushed into whichever card looks closest. It simply says it could not tell.
It knows nothing about an animal's bloodline, age, health, or the keeping policy of the zoo you are visiting.

A REQUEST
Please do not reach through a fence, touch an animal or feed it. Follow the photography rules of the zoo you are in.
