When you are up against it, taking a break may be the last thing on your mind, but there is considerable evidence to suggest that a period of ‘unfocus’ can help you get more done. On-going focus will exhaust circuits in your brain: it can drain your energy, making you likely to be more impulsive, less helpful, decisions may be poorly thought out, and you can become less collaborative in your approach.
The challenge is working out when to take a break, for how long, and what to do in that break.
The timing of a break will depend on your own cycle of alertness – you will know when you start flagging at a task, but a break can be as short as 60 seconds (micro-break), providing it is a total distraction from the task at hand – not just staring out the window!
The DMN (Default Mode Network) is a part of the brain that operates under the brain’s conscious radar – activating old memories, going back and forward between past, present and future, and recombining different ideas. Research is linking it to creative thinking, problem solving, cognitive flexibility and team leadership, through positive, constructive mind-wandering.
