عثمانی ترک، جن کا یہ نام کسی نسل یا قوم کی طرف نہیں بلکہ ان کے پہلے فرماں روا عثمان خان کی طرف منسوب ہے، ایشیائے کوچک میں پہلے خانہ بدوشوں کی حیثیت سے داخل ہوئے۔ پھر ایک ایسی سلطنت کی بنیاد ڈالی جو ڈیڑھ سو برس کے اندر دُنیا کی زبردست طاقتوں میں شمار کی جانے لگی۔ تین سو برس گزرنے نہ پائے تھے کہ عثمانی سلطنت وسعت اور طاقت کے لحاظ سے دُنیا کی سب سے زیادہ عظیم الشان سلطنت بن گئی۔ اس کے عروج کا دَور مشرق میں سلطان سلیم اوّل اور مغرب میں سلیمان اعظم کی فتوحات پر ختم ہوتا ہے، جس کی حکومت ایشیا، یورپ اور افریقہ کے وسیع حصوں میں قائم تھی۔ اس عہد میں عثمانی ترک ایک مرکزی یورپین طاقت تھے۔ ہنگری ان کے زیرنگیں تھا اور آسٹریا کے پایۂ تخت ویانا کی دیواروں تک ان کی فوجیں پہنچ چکی تھیں۔ ان کی ہیبت سارے یورپ پر چھائی ہوئی تھی۔ لیکن سلیمان اعظم کی زندگی ہی میں سلطنت کے اندر بعض کمزوریوں کے اسباب پیدا ہونے شروع ہو گئے تھے، جو اِس کی وفات کے بعد روز بروز نمایاں ہوتے گئے۔ سلیمان کے بعد جتنے سلاطین تخت پر بیٹھے، ان میں سے معدودے چند کے علاوہ کسی میںسلطنت عثمانیہ کی فرماں روائی کی اہلیت نہ تھی۔ چنانچہ جس طرح آہستہ آہستہ اس سلطنت کا عروج ہوا تھا، اسی آہستگی کے ساتھ اس کا زوال بھی شروع ہوا اور اس کے زوال کی مدت بھی اس کے عہد عروج کی طرح تین سو سال ہے۔ ان میں سے آخری ڈیڑھ سو برس میں سلطنت عثمانیہ اپنے سے کہیں زیادہ طاقتور سلطنتوں کا مقابلہ کرتی رہی مگر اندرونی کمزوریوں کے باعث ایسی پے در پے شکستیں اٹھائیں کہ بالآخر1922ء میں اس کا خاتمہ ہو گیا۔ حال ہی میں جمہوریہ ترکیہ نے اپنے چند سالہ قیام میں ان تمام کمزوریوں کو جو سلطنتِ عثمانیہ کی تباہی کا باعث ہوئی تھیں، دُور کرنے کی کوشش کی ہے اور اس کوشش میں اس کی کامیابی تاریخِ عالم کے حیرت انگیز کارناموں میں سے ہے۔ اس نے گزشتہ سلطنت کے کھنڈر پر ایک مستحکم قلعہ تعمیر کر لیا ہے جو ترکی قوم کے عزم و استقلال کی ایک زندہ مثال ہے۔

The Ottoman Empire also known as the Turkish Empire was an empire that controlled much of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa between the 14th and early 20th centuries. It was founded at the end of the 13th century in northwestern Anatolia in the town of Söğüt (modern-day Bilecik Province) by the Turkoman tribal leader Osman I. After 1354, the Ottomans crossed into Europe and, with the conquest of the Balkans, the Ottoman beylik was transformed into a transcontinental empire. The Ottomans ended the Byzantine Empire with the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by Mehmed the Conqueror.
