Terrariums are aquarium-like tanks, usually made of glass and plastic materials, in which the land environment is simulated for reptiles, insects, and some plant species. It is decorated in different sizes according to the creature to be contained.
Terrariums are made of transparent and durable materials such as glass and plastic. Their surface is glass, with glass covers on top and sometimes in front. Its edges and corners are fixed with a frame. With black silicone (any non-toxic silicone), insulation is made at the junctions of the surfaces.
Its base is covered with natural or artificial floor materials. These; natural or other synthetic materials such as sand, earth, gravel, various stones, plant fibers. In terrariums prepared for animals and insects, sometimes hiding places are created by placing small caves in the ground. Sometimes the plant can also be placed by burying the pot on the ground with artificial material.
The first modern terrariums were made in England in the 1830s by Dr. Nathaniel Ward introduced it. Ward's plants, who had a passion for botany, could not survive in London, the industrial city of the time, which had a polluted atmosphere. After a while, Ward stumbled upon healthy plants growing in his jars with soil residue inside. This coincidence led him to develop the modern terrarium, also known as the Wardian Case. Terrariums were later used to sustain tropical plants and animals that needed high humidity that would normally be difficult to maintain indoors.
Terrariums are divided into different types according to the purpose of their creation. Examples of these are:
These are terrariums with open sides and tops, used to create a planted area inside.
Depending on the situation, it is a type of terrarium used to create botanical areas that are completely covered and have very few openings.
The upper part, the sides of which are closed so that they can breathe, are terrariums, which are sealed with wires and designed in such a way that they can be intervened in one of the side facades, generally created for reptile-like creatures.
They can be shown as closed areas where animals can be kept in terrariums, but the animals that can be controlled in terrariums should be in the status of domesticated creatures or can be kept in the terrarium. Animals that can be kept in terrariums; snakes, chameleon, turtle, frog, iguana, hamster, spider species, insect species.
