The Space Needle is an observation tower located in Seattle, Washington, USA. In addition to being one of the important and remarkable structures of the region, it is seen as the symbol of the city of Seattle. The east of the building began in 1959 when the American businessman Edward Carlson was inspired by the Stuttgart Tower in Germany. The idea of architecture came to light with Carlson's design for the Seattle World's Fair, the main theme of which was the 21st century, to be held in 1962. Edward Carlson painted the first design of the project on a napkin while sitting in a restaurant. However, this design could not find sufficient support because it is challenging to implement in real life. Afterward, the design belonging to Carlson was stretched from many changes and took its final form.
The final shape of the Space Needle was created by architect John Graham by changing Carlson's balloon-shaped design to a saucer shape. The construction of which started on 17 April 1961, was completed on 8 December 1961 before the start of the fair. The building is located in the Seattle Center, which hosts the fair. The height of the tower is 184.41 meters, including the antenna at the top. Three different elevators serve in the building, which consists of a total of six floors. The tower is designed to withstand winds of approximately 321 kilometers per hour and ground tremors of less than 9 degrees. During the fair, the architectural structure hosted about 20,000 visitors per day and approximately 2.3 million visitors in total. With around 1 million visitors annually, it is one of the most visited destinations in the Northwest region of the United States.
A horsepower electric motor moves the circular part on the top floor of the Space Needle. The division finishes each round in forty-seven minutes. Being able to see Seattle and its surroundings clearly from the restaurant on the top floor is one of the greatest pleasures. In addition to being one of the city's most important tourist attractions, the architectural monument has also become the center of mind for many events throughout the year for those living in and around Seattle. One of the most important is the fireworks show held every New Year's Eve. Thousands of people gather around the architecture on New Year's Eve to watch this show every year. In addition, the flag hung on the top of the tower is replaced with flags that symbolize the meaning of the day or an event at intervals.
