About Pinewing Observation Log

Pinewing Observation Log is a field journal for people who count birds in northern woods, conifer stands and forest trails. Start a session when you step onto the trail, tap the birds you see, and finish with a clean summary of where you were, how long you stayed and what you recorded.

START A SESSION IN SECONDS
• Enter a location name and the session timer starts right away.
• Note the conditions: sky, wind and temperature for each outing.
• Add a short note about habitat or light whenever you like.

COUNT AS BIRDS APPEAR
• Search a built-in list of 45 northern forest species: chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, kinglets, thrushes, crossbills, owls and more.
• Every species shows its common and scientific name.
• Tap again to raise a count, or use minus to correct it.
• Add a custom species if the bird you saw is not in the list.

SESSION SUMMARIES
• Total duration, total birds and number of species at a glance.
• Species breakdown sorted from most to fewest birds.
• The weather you recorded is kept with the session.

YOUR HISTORY
• Past sessions as illustrated cards, newest first.
• Data stats for all sessions, birds and species you have logged.
• A session in progress is kept safe even if you close the app.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
• Works fully offline, no account needed.
• No location tracking: a location is simply the name you type.
• No ads and no in-app purchases. You can reset all data at any time.

Pinewing Observation Log is a personal counting tool. It does not identify birds from photos or sounds.
