About Words on the Road: Portuguese
Going to Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve or Madeira? Learn the Portuguese you will actually use, the way it is spoken in Portugal.
Every lesson is a situation: ordering at a café, buying a train ticket, asking the way, checking in, paying at the market, the pharmacy. You hear what the other person says, choose what you would answer, and if you get it wrong you see exactly why: what your choice really means, or why it is Brazilian rather than European Portuguese ("autocarro", not "ônibus"; "casa de banho", not "banheiro").
Then each phrase comes back a day or a few days later in a different situation. "Onde é a casa de banho?" learned at the café comes back in the metro station. That is how you find out if it stuck.
• 10 situations, 40 short scenes, about 200 phrases and expressions
• European Portuguese, not Brazilian: comboio, pequeno-almoço, fixe, "se faz favor"
• Pronunciation hints written for English speakers, plus tips on the sounds that surprise people
• Device text-to-speech in European Portuguese when your phone has the voice (no internet needed); clear hints when it does not
• Spaced review: phrases return when you are about to forget them, always in a new context
• Phrase of the day and a daily streak
• Travel diary: your statistics and 8 medals to earn; confetti at the end of every lesson
• Share a scene as a challenge code with a friend
• Pause any time; the app picks up exactly where you stopped
• Adjustable text size, reduce motion, screen-reader labels, no colour-only information
• Works offline, no account, no sign-up
• Free, with ads and no purchases. Extra practice after a video is always optional
This is a phrasebook you practise, not a fluency course: short, useful Portuguese for travelling.
App interface in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and German. The course itself is explained in English.
