Charlatan: Imposter Word Game

Charlatan is the classic imposter game, made for one phone passed round the table: an offline party game of words, pass and play, for three to twenty players. Everyone gets the secret word except the imposter, who has to bluff. Round the table, each player says one word that shows they know the secret without giving it away. Then the table votes on who was bluffing. If your table calls it the spy word game, this is that game too.

★ ONE PHONE, PASSED ROUND
Each player in turn taps to see their own card, reads it and turns it back before passing the phone on. A card is face up only after its own player's tap, and it turns face down if you leave the app, take a call or the screen goes off. The app switcher never shows a card. An imposter's card is the same colour and the same shape as everyone else's.

★ TWO MODES
Classic: the imposters know they are the imposters and nothing more - or only the category, or a short hint, as your table chooses. Close words: nobody is told, and the imposters hold a close word from the same category - tea where the table has coffee - so they have to notice from the clues that theirs is the odd one.

★ 3 TO 20 PLAYERS
Name the players or just number the seats, put them in the order you sit, and keep them for next time. At most one imposter for every three players, so the table always outnumbers the imposters two to one.

★ 2,051 WORDS IN 32 CATEGORIES
Animals, food, jobs, sports, places, weather, travel, fantasy and more, every word with a hint written for it, and 373 close pairs for Close words. Every category is free, nothing is locked and there is nothing to buy. No word comes up twice in an evening until its category has run out.

★ YOUR OWN CATEGORIES
Make categories for the things only your table knows - your office, your street, your favourite places - and play them just like the ones that come with the app. Export them to a plain text file and import them on another phone, through Android's own file picker.

★ CLUES, A VOTE AND A LAST CHANCE
A clue timer of 1 to 10 minutes, or none, that you can pause. Then everyone votes aloud and taps the player the table accused. In Classic, a caught imposter gets one last chance to name the word.

★ SCORES FOR THE EVENING
Every player who is not an imposter scores a point for each imposter the table catches; an imposter nobody accused scores two, and a caught imposter scores one by naming the word. Next round keeps the players and the settings.

★ OFFLINE, AND NOTHING TO SIGN IN TO
Every word is inside the app, and your players, scores and categories stay on this phone. The internet is used for the ads and for nothing else. Android's cloud backup is off for this app, so a new phone starts with Charlatan at its defaults - export your own categories first to take them with you.

★ MADE TO BE READ
On the pass screen TalkBack hears whose turn it is and nothing secret, and a face-up card reads its word to its own player. A light theme and a dark one, or the colours of your wallpaper.

Ads: one full-screen ad now and then, after a round's result when you leave it - never while a card can be turned over, never between two players passing the phone, never over the timer, and never after the evening's first round. No banners. In Settings, a short video gives you 4 hours without full-screen ads; nothing in the game is behind it.
