Warplanes are fixed-wing military aircraft designed primarily for air-to-air combat.
The role of warplane in military conflicts is to establish air superiority on the battlefield. Domination of the airspace above a battlefield allows bombers and attack aircraft to conduct tactical and strategic bombing of enemy targets.
Warplane key performance characteristics include firepower, high speed, and maneuverability relative to the target aircraft. The most significant factor in the success or failure of a Warplane efforts to gain air superiority is the ability of its trained pilots, dependent on various factors, including the tactical soundness of the doctrine of deploying fighters and the number and performance of these fighters.
Many modern warplanes in today's history are also equipped with secondary capabilities such as ground attacks. Some types, such as fighter-bombers, were designed from the start for dual roles. Other fighter designs are highly specialized and still perform the primary air superiority role and include interceptor, heavy fighter, and night fighter warplane.
Warplanes are primarily designed for air-to-air combat. A particular type may be designed for specific combat conditions and, in some cases, for additional roles such as air-to-surface combat.
Historically the British Royal Air Army and Royal Air Force referred to them as "reconnaissance" aircraft until the early 1920s. The US Army, on the other hand, referred to them as "follower" aircraft until the late 1940s.
The United Kingdom called them combatants in the 1920s, while the US Army began using the term in the 1940s. They are fighters that can defend at short range, designed for defense against incoming enemy warplane.
Many warplanes were deployed for different purposes in the First and Second World Wars. Some of them did not even have weapons to fight in the war. In terms of design and mission, Warplane also used to collect intelligence on the battlefield and mail military documents in light or lighter fuel tanks that can fly long range.
The first jet-powered Warplane in history was the Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe, known as the Swallow in German, during World War II. It was produced towards the end of World War II and took an active part in many missions in the war.
