Even though Muscle Cars are defined as American cars, they cannot be said to be entirely accurate. Although Muscle Cars is indeed an American car, it would be more accurate to say that it is only one of the types included in this definition. However, it did not have this name at the time of its production. It carried its popularity under the name Supercars. Supercar is used for ultra-sports vehicles, which are very expensive and fast.
The fact that it was called Supercars at the time makes sense, considering that intermediate-class cars, which cost between 2000-3000 US dollars then, could be upgraded with powerful V8 engines and owned with a difference of a few hundred dollars. Muscle Cars continued their intensive production between 1964 and 1972. By the 80s, the name had finally evolved into Muscle Cars. However, even though they are gathered under a single character, these cars are divided into four categories: Compact Muscle Cars, Pony Cars, Intermediate Muscle Cars, and Full-Size Muscle Cars.
Muscle Cars production has its roots in dragstrip races. In the 1950s, the Baby Boomers, the generation that came after the Second World War, fell in love with these quarter-mile races. These races, which were illegal at first, were later made legal.
So they overhauled their production cars and added extra powerful engines. These improved and powerful cars were priced in a way that the youth of that time could afford to buy. Thus began the era of Muscle Cars. Although vehicles such as the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88, Hudson Hornet, Chrysler C-300, and 1957 Rambler Rebel (AMC) are among the most popular car models of the Muscle Cars era, some people accept the 1964 Pontiac GTO as the first Muscle Cars.
Muscle Cars allow us to relive our majority states when we come across them on the road. Muscle Cars enjoyed their golden age from 1964 to 1973.
