A satellite is an object orbiting or orbiting a larger object in space. There are two types of satellites: natural ones, such as the Moon orbiting the Earth, or artificial ones, such as the International Space Station orbiting the Earth.

There are dozens of natural satellites in the Solar System, with nearly every planet having at least one. For example, Saturn has at least 53 moons, and it also had an artificial satellite called the Cassini spacecraft, which discovered the ringed planet and its moons between 2004 and 2007.

There was no such thing as an "artificial satellite" until the mid-20th century. The first artificial satellite was the beach ball-sized Russian space probe Sputnik, which took off on October 4, 1957. This event shocked much of the Western world; it was believed that the Soviets did not have the power to send satellites into space.

Following this success, on November 3, 1957, the Soviets launched an even larger satellite, Sputnik 2, which carried a dog named Laika. The first satellite of the United States was Explorer 1 on January 31, 1958. The satellite was only 2% of the mass of Sputnik 2, but it still had a group of 13 kilograms.

Sputnik and Explorer 1 were the first shots of a space race between the United States and the Soviets that lasted until the late 1960s. The focus on satellites as political tools was beginning to give way to humans; because both countries sent humans into space in 1961.

As its benefits impact society, other countries have also begun launching satellites into space. Weather satellites have improved weather forecasts, even for remote locations. Land watcher satellites such as the Landsat series observed changes over time in forests, water, and other parts of the Earth's surface. Communications satellites made long-distance telephone calls and, eventually, live television broadcasts from around the world a regular part of life.
