Machu Picchu is the city of a tribe called the Incas, founded in ancient times in the Urubamba Valley of Cusco, located in the Peruvian Andes Mountains. Perched high above the Urubamba river, the place has been described as a fortress, imperial sanctuary, and ceremonial site.

Machu Picchu was a sanctuary for the Incas, founded by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui in AD 1450 and housed in shrines with a capacity of 1000 people. During the collapse of the Inca empire, the Incas were forced to leave the city of Machu Picchu. Explorer Hiram Bingham discovered Machu Picchu on his expedition in 1911 and registered it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Machu Picchu (meaning 'old hill') is an imperial estate founded and owned by the Inca ruler Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui in the mid-15th century AD.

Machu Picchu was rediscovered by explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911 AD (although residents of the valley have always known of the site's existence). Machu Picchu was claimed to be the last capital of the Incas.

Another hypothesis put forward by early historians was that Machu Picchu was a fortress with solid walls, incredible towers, and dry moats to support this theory.

The most likely primary purpose for founding Machu Picchu was probably a sacred place to the sun god Inti and to remind the recently conquered local population of the power and might of the Pachacuti and Inca empire, with its capital at Cuzco.

The Incas left shortly before Pizarro and the Spanish sailors arrived. However, the Marines never reached Machu Picchu, and this place would not be known to the whole world for 400 years.

Machu Picchu is a fine example of Inca architecture's practice of shaping around natural terrain.

The location of Machu Picchu consists of two separate areas: a central complex of closely spaced buildings placed around the main square. The structures on the east and south sides were residential and one-room residences with verandahs.
