When you look at the history of American cars, 1964 had an exciting and competitive environment. In the same year, Pontiac GTO was launched, while Plymouth Barracuda and Ford Mustang models were offered for sale in the same class. Thus, the concept of Pony Car was born, and the market was mixed.
The Pontiac brand is named after the Native American Chief, Pontiac Obwandiyag. Pontiac GTO produced five generations of cars from 1964 to 2006 by "General Motors."
The 1st Generation Pontiac GTO was produced between 1964 and 1967. It was available as an option package for Pontiac LeMans. With a V8 engine, 6362cm3 cylinder volume, 365 horsepower, and 575 Nm / 3600 rpm torque, the vehicle could accelerate to 0-100 km in 7.9 seconds and had a maximum speed of 193 km.
The 2nd Generation Pontiac GTO was produced from 1968 to 1972. The powertrain options remained essentially the same as in 1967, but the power rating of the standard GTO engine increased to 350 hp (260 kW) at 5,000 rpm.
The 3rd Generation Pontiac GTO was produced in 1973. The GTO made on this date was less prevalent than in other years. The standard 400 CID V8 in the 1973 Pontiac GTO was downgraded to 8.0:1 in compression, down to 230 hp (170 kW). The 400 engine consisted of three transmissions, including the standard three-speed manual or the optional four-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic.
The 4th Generation Pontiac GTO was perhaps the last model produced in the 1974 American line of muscle cars. Problems for the 1974 model year followed an oil and gas crisis. Other factors that led to the discontinued Pontiac GTO were decreased interest in performance cars and stricter emissions requirements that lowered engine compression ratios to use unleaded fuel and catalytic converters.
The 5th Generation Pontiac GTO, which appeared again in 2003 after many years, was utterly different from its old appearance. GM's Holden subsidiary assembles the Pontiac GTO in Elizabeth, South Australia. It was equipped with the 5.7 L LS1 V8 engine for the 2004 model year.
