Starfish is the common name given to marine invertebrates belonging to the Asteroidea class of the echinoderm branch of the animal kingdom. Around the world, there are some 1,500 species of starfish on the seafloor, from the tropics to the cold polar sea waters. They live in the region from the sea coast to a depth of 6,000 m.
Although most starfish have five arms emanating from a central disc, the number of components varies. The Luidia Ciliaris starfish has seven arms, while the Solasteridae family members have ten to fifteen arms. The Labidiaster Annulatus starfish, which lives in Antarctica, has about fifty components. Some individuals of starfish species, which generally have five arms, may also have six or more arms due to abnormal development.
The starfish's mechanism for movement, attachment, feeding, and breathing consists of a network of fluid-filled channels working with the hydraulic principle, called the ambulacral system.
Some starfish species also twist their arm ends upwards as they move, and the sensor tube provides a maximum opening for their feet and eyes to external stimuli.
The digestive and excretory system of the starfish fills almost the entire central disc and extends into the arms.
In more advanced starfish species, the cardiac stomach is turned inside out from the mouth and begins to digest the prey by covering it. If the prey is a mussel, the starfish opens the shells of the mussel with its tube feet, inserts a small part of its stomach inside, and secretes enzymes that will provide digestion.
Some species of starfish can reproduce asexually when they are adults, either by splitting their central disc or by autotomy of one or more of their arms. Which asexual reproduction method is used varies according to the starfish species. Among starfish that can regenerate their entire bodies from a single arm, some species can reproduce asexually from even a 1 cm piece of a component. The development of a whole starfish from a single-arm is called a "comet" because it resembles a comet. Splitting a starfish from its disc or base of the arm is accompanied by a weakness in the structure that creates a fracture zone.
