About PerliPlayer: Media Player
PerliPlayer is a media player for Android built on libmpv and ffmpeg — the same decoding stack desktop players use. That is the whole point: if ffmpeg can open a file, PerliPlayer can play it, instead of handing you "this video cannot be played".
There is no account, no sign-up and no server of ours. The app opens files off your device and out of your home network. It sends us no analytics, no crash reports and no usage data. Your library, your playback positions and your settings stay on the device.
PLAYS THE AWKWARD FILES
MKV, MP4, AVI, TS and M2TS, VOB, WebM, FLV, RMVB, MXF, OGV and the rest — plus FLAC, Opus, DSD, APE, WavPack, DTS, TrueHD and tracker formats on the audio side. Hardware decoding is on by default (auto-safe), and you can force software decoding when a device's decoder misbehaves.
PLAYBACK CONTROL
- Speed from 0.25x to 4x
- A-B loop, chapter list, bookmarks
- Resume where you left off: always, ask each time, or never
- Shuffle, repeat one, repeat all, and a queue you can drag into order
- Sleep timer, stop at the end of the queue, stop after this file
VIDEO
- Aspect: best fit, fill, stretch, original, 16:9, 16:10, 4:3, 21:9, 2.35:1, 1:1, 5:4
- Zoom, rotate, horizontal and vertical flip
- Brightness, contrast, saturation, gamma and hue
- Deinterlace
- Snapshot the current frame to PNG (saved to Pictures/PerliPlayer)
AUDIO
- Pick any audio track, or attach an external audio file
- Audio delay, plus or minus 5 seconds
- 10-band equaliser with the classic preset table, plus a preamp
- Volume normalisation and surround-to-stereo downmix
- Volume boost to 200%, raisable to 400% in Settings
SUBTITLES
- Embedded tracks and sidecar files, including ASS/SSA rendered by libass — the app bundles a font so styled subtitles actually appear
- Loads subtitles sitting next to the video, including from a Subs folder
- Delay, size, vertical position, colour, outline, background and bold
- Preferred subtitle language and automatic sidecar loading
LIBRARY AND BROWSING
- Video and Audio tabs built from the system media index
- A "Continue watching" row, search, and natural sort so episode 2 comes before episode 10
- Video library as a grid or a list, with thumbnails
- A real folder browser that reaches files the media indexer never saw
- Favourites, recently played, and saved playlists
- Opens M3U, M3U8, PLS, XSPF, ASX and WPL playlists, and exports as M3U
NETWORK
- Open a stream by URL: HTTP and HTTPS, HLS, DASH, RTSP, RTMP, SRT, RIST, FTP, SFTP and SMB shares
- Browse the DLNA/UPnP media servers on your network
- Cast to a DLNA renderer — a TV or receiver — including your own local files, which the app serves over a temporary HTTP server on the LAN with range support so the TV can seek
ON ANDROID
- Background playback with a media notification, lock-screen controls and headset buttons
- Picture-in-picture
- Gestures: swipe the left half for brightness, the right half for volume, sideways to seek, double-tap either side to skip, pinch to zoom, long-press for 2x
- Screen lock and rotation lock
- Launcher shortcuts and a Quick Settings play/pause tile
- Registered for Open with, so it shows up for the file types listed above
ADVERTS
• A Google AdMob banner in the library, and now and then a full-screen ad after you have left the player, pay for the free app. Nothing is ever shown over a video, and there are no ads on a TV. Consent is asked for where the law requires it.
ABOUT PERMISSIONS
Media and storage permissions are what let the app read your files; it asks for them the first time it needs them, not at launch. All-files access is only requested if you use the folder browser to reach a file outside the media index, and you can decline and still use the media library. Network access is used for streams you open, for DLNA on your own network, and for the ads.
PerliPlayer is one codebase: the Linux, Windows and macOS desktop builds run the same engine as this app.
