PerliDial: Caller ID & Phone

PerliDial is a phone app: the keypad you dial from, the recent calls you ring back, your contacts, and the screen that appears when the phone rings. Set it as your default phone app and it takes all of that over from the dialer your phone came with. It also tells you what it honestly can about a number before you answer.

A COMPLETE DIALER
• Keypad with the numbers you last dialled above it, so redial is one tap.
• Recents, grouped by caller and day, filtered by missed, incoming or outgoing.
• Contacts, favourites first, with a Top 10 strip of who you ring most.
• Search by name or number, in any saved format.
• Add, edit and delete contacts, and see every call to and from one number.
• Opens tel: links from other apps, filled in but never dialled for you.

IT REPLACES YOUR PHONE APP, AND THAT IS WHY IT ASKS FOR THIS
Android only gives the default phone app role to an app that can handle a call from start to finish. These permissions are for that and nothing else.
• Phone (make and answer calls): to place your call, and to answer, hold or decline an incoming one on PerliDial's own call screen.
• Call log (read and write): Recents is your phone's call log. PerliDial reads it to show your calls and writes to it so calls placed here are recorded.
• Contacts (read and write): to put a name against a ringing number, list your address book, and save an edit or a new contact, including during a call.
• Phone state and phone numbers: to know a call is live, and to show your own SIM numbers on the share-my-number screen.
• Notifications and full-screen notifications: the ongoing call notification with answer and hang up buttons, and the call screen over the lock screen.
• Audio settings, vibration and wake lock: speaker and Bluetooth routing, ringing, and turning the screen off at your ear so a cheek cannot press End.

KNOWING WHO IS CALLING, WITHOUT ASKING ANYONE
• The name from your own address book, or a label you typed against a number.
• What the number itself gives away: Irish mobile, Dublin landline, Freephone, Lo-call, premium rate or international.
• How often it has rung you, how many you missed, whether you ever called back.
• A possible nuisance call warning, shown as a suspicion and never as a fact.
• No caller ID database and no lookup: it is all worked out from the number and the call log already on your phone.

DURING A CALL
• Mute, hold, speaker, wired headset and Bluetooth.
• A keypad for automated lines, so press 1 for accounts can be answered.
• Call waiting, swap, add a second call and merge into a conference.
• Decline with a text message, and a SIM picker on a dual SIM phone.
• Add an unknown caller to your contacts mid-call.

BLOCKING
• A blocked number is refused before the phone rings, so you never hear it.
• It still appears in your call log, so you can see who tried.
• Blocking matches on the last digits, so one caller stays blocked in any format.

SHARING A NUMBER WITH NO SIGNAL
• Show a QR code of your number that any phone camera can add as a contact.
• Send a contact card as sound: one phone plays a short burst of tones, the other listens. The microphone is used only on that listening screen; PerliDial never records a call.
• Hand contacts to another PerliDial phone over Bluetooth, never via a server.
• Point the camera at a card or a letterhead and PerliDial reads the numbers off it, on the device. The photo never leaves the phone.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
• Contacts, call log, block list, labels and favourites stay on the device and are never sent anywhere.
• No account and no sign-in.
• Free, with one advert after some calls: never during a call, never while you dial, none for your first two calls, at most one every three minutes. Ads are served by Google AdMob, with your consent where the law requires it.
