The original 1939 poster, Keep Calm and Carry on, was a 1939 "Keep Calm" motivational poster prepared by the British government to raise the morale of soldiers threatened by widely anticipated mass air strikes on major cities. The Keep Calm poster was rarely on public display despite 2.45 million copies being printed and the Blitz happening. A document was discovered in Barter Books in 2000, and before that date, it was a little-known product in a bookstore in Alnwick. It has since been reissued by several private companies, and Keep Calm has been used as a decorative theme for several products.
Evoking the Victorian belief in English stoicism - "hard upper lip," self-discipline, grit, and Keep Calm in challenges - his poster gained worldwide recognition. Only two original copies of "Keep Calm" were thought to have survived until it was brought to the Antiques Roadshow in 2012 by the daughter of a former Royal Observation Corps member.
