The Sunnah has a special position in Islamic law because of the authoritative power it has. Such an important position places the Sunnah as one of the sources that must be used as a reference in making and determining almost every legal decision. If the authority of the Sunnah as a source of law has been agreed upon by almost all Muslims, then the problem of how to understand the Sunnah is not the case.
In classical Islamic thought, the issue of how to understand the Sunnah as an authoritative source has become an area of extensive and in-depth study. In the first centuries of Islam there was a fierce battle of ideas between ahl al-hadith and ahl al-ra'yī in looking at this issue. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the various schools that have emerged have caused an atmosphere of legal uncertainty as a result of differences in giving fatwas or making decisions by judicial institutions in various regions. Nevertheless, each party still claims its legal decision to be valid and derived from the Sunnah.
