We all agree that we must follow the Prophet Muhammad as a role model in religion. However, to follow Rasulullah SAW, of course there is a way and a path.
Rasulullah SAW in an authentic hadith narrated by Imam Muslim said "The best people are my generation (Friends), then the generation after that (Thabi'in), then the generation after that (Thabi'it Thabiin)".
Anyone among us who follows these three generations is certainly the same as following the Prophet Muhammad. Because the knowledge of the Prophet SAW was accepted by the friends, then the friends conveyed the knowledge of the Prophet SAW to the Thabi'in, then the Thabi'in taught the knowledge of the Prophet SAW to the Thabi'it' Thabi'in.
From here we know that the founders of the 4 Madzhab, namely Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Malik, Imam Syafi'i and Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal lived during the Thabi'it Thabiin generation. This shows that they are the best generation recommended by Rasulullah SAW to be followed.
