The Toyota Celica (Japanese: トヨタ・セリカ, Hepburn: Toyota Serika) is a car manufactured by Toyota from 1970 to 2006. The name Celica comes from the Latin celiac, meaning 'heavenly.' The Celica was exclusive to the Toyota Corolla Store dealer chain in Japan.
The new generation Toyota Celica was powered by four-cylinder engines, and there were convertibles, namely liftbacks, coupés, and notchback coupés.
In 1973, Toyota Celica coined the term Liftback to describe its hatchback model and made a good profit by launching the Liftback GT for the North American market.
The Toyota Celica concept created a sports car by adding mechanics from Toyota Carina to its new vehicle to produce a sedan with a coupe body and a high-volume engine with a chassis like the Ford Mustang. But some auto magazine writers thought it was based on the Corona model because of some shared mechanical parts.
The first three generations of the North American market were powered by variants of the Toyota Celica - R-series engine. In August 1985, The Celica's driving layout was changed from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive turbocharged models were offered from 1986 to 1999. From December 1997, variable valve timing became standard on some Japanese models. In 1986 the six-cylinder Celica Supra variant was produced as a separate model, becoming simply the Supra. Slightly modified versions of the Toyota Celica were sold through the Toyopet dealer network in the 1980s as the Corona Coupé and in the 1990s as the Toyota Curren through the Vista network.
The Toyota Celica GT won the Motor Trend Car of the Year (Imported Vehicle) award in 1976.
