The museum's ancient Near Eastern Art collection includes more than 7,000 works dating from the eighth millennium BC. For centuries just before the advent of Islam in the seventh century AD. Eastern Art Collection covers a wide area surrounding the present-day Middle East and neighboring regions stretching to the north, the Caucasus, and the Eurasian steppes; in the south to the Arabian Peninsula, in the west to Anatolia, Syria and the eastern Mediterranean coasts, and to the east to western Central Asia, with connections through Iran and into the Indus River Valley.
Near Eastern Art is art found in ancient Mesopotamia (modern Iraq and Syria, and regions of Turkey centered on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers) and Iran.
The first ancient Near Eastern art (Assyrian stone reliefs, cuneiform tablets, stamps, and cylinder seals) to enter The Met collection was obtained in the late 1800s.
The Decorative Arts Department supervised Near Eastern works until 1932, when a separate Near Eastern Art Department was established, covering both the pre-Islamic and Islamic periods. As the collection grew with works such as ivory from Nimrud and increased scholarship led to greater specialization, a separate Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art was formally established in 1956.
