Senkaimis – Old Maps

Old maps, precisely laid over today's view.

Senkaimis shows what your area looked like one or two hundred years ago: vanished villages, manors, old roads, mills and forgotten graveyards. Not a scan in one place and a satellite image in another, but one on top of the other – with a transparency slider, so you can see exactly where the old crossroads lies today.

AROUND 40 HISTORIC MAPS
Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Germany, from 1767 to 1984: Prussian survey maps, the 1843 map of the Kingdom of Poland, Russian Imperial three-verst, two-verst and one-verst maps, German 1:25,000 sheets of 1914–1918, interwar and Red Army maps, German Messtischblätter, and aerial and reconnaissance satellite photos from 1941–1984. LIDAR TERRAIN AND 3D
Laser-scanned ground at 0.5 m resolution reveals what neither old maps nor satellites show: hillforts, burial mounds, ramparts, trenches and the outlines of old farmsteads under the forest. Five views (grey, colour, archaeological, rises, hollows), sun direction, cross-section and 3D. Available for Lithuania and Latvia.

WORKS OFFLINE
Choose an area and download it to your phone. In the forest, in the fields or wherever there is no signal, the map opens and shows where you are standing. You see the download size before you start.

WALKING MODE
Records where you walked, even with the screen off and the phone in your pocket. If you leave the marked area or drift off your walking line, the phone vibrates – differently for left and right.
