VSCodroid: Code Editor & IDE

Code editor, IDE and Linux terminal in one Android app. Real extensions, a real bash terminal, Git, Node.js and Python, all on your device. No root, no PC, no cloud account. Works offline.

VSCodroid is an independent open source project, built from Code - OSS, the MIT-licensed source code that Microsoft's Visual Studio Code is built from. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Microsoft Corporation.

A Real Editor, Not a Lookalike
- Not a lookalike, and not a browser pointed at someone else's server: it all runs on your device
- Syntax highlighting, completions, go to definition, find all references, refactoring, multi-file search
- Built-in language support for TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, HTML, CSS and JSON
- Install extensions from Open VSX, the open registry for VS Code extensions: themes, linters, formatters, language support
- GitHub Copilot Chat is built in. Bring your own account, and the sign-in survives a restart

Linux Terminal, Not a Toy Shell
- Real PTY terminals with xterm-256color, so interactive and full-screen command line tools work
- bash, tmux, make, ripgrep, ssh and ssh-keygen preinstalled, native arm64, on PATH at first launch
- Push and pull over HTTPS or SSH: generate an SSH key and copy the public half from the Command Palette
- npm and npx work in the terminal
- Claude Code runs here too, once you install its extension

Languages and Runtimes
- Node.js 24 and npm, preinstalled
- Python 3.14 and pip, preinstalled
- Ruby 3.4 and Java 17 on demand, delivered by Google Play only if you ask for them, never bundled into the install

Your Files, Wherever They Live
- Open a folder from anywhere on the device, SD cards and cloud storage included, through Android's own file picker
- Edits sync both ways, and you can save files back out to device storage
- Run a dev server and open it from another device on your network

Built for Touch
- Extra key row: Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Tab, Esc, F1 to F12, Home, End, PgUp, PgDn, brackets and symbols
- A cursor trackpad for arrow keys
- Finger-sized controls that follow portrait, landscape and split screen
- A foreground service keeps the server running in the background and restarts it if it dies
- The memory ceiling is derived from your device's RAM, and a process tree view shows what is running

Works Offline
Setup needs no network at all. After that, editing, the terminal, Git, Python and Node.js run with no connection and no account. Only extension downloads, git remotes, on-demand languages and AI features need internet.

Why This Exists
Learning to build software should depend on effort and curiosity, not the price of a laptop. For learners whose only computer is a phone, for developers who want a fallback environment in their pocket, and for educators lowering the cost of the first step: a real editor, a real terminal, real tooling, real output.

Before You Install
64-bit ARM device (arm64-v8a), Android 13 or newer. Large download, and about 1 GB of free space for first-run setup: the editor, Node.js, Python and the command line tools all ship with the app. Ruby and Java download separately, only if you choose them.
