About Putter: Calm Morning Routine

The first hour is not a to-do list.

Puttering is the old word for it: newspapers, breakfast, and nothing that has to be decided before ten. Most morning routine apps do the opposite and wake you into a scoreboard. Putter is a calm morning with a clock on it.

Pick 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes and start. Your phone turns into:

• A warm, low-contrast clock you can read from across the kitchen. No second hand.
• A countdown you can't watch tick. It says "about 20 minutes left" and only changes when that stops being true.
• One plain place to put a thought if one shows up. No headings, no checkboxes, no tags.
• A slow ring under the clock, paced for box breathing if you feel like following it. Nothing tells you to.

What the app does that a browser can't:

• Do Not Disturb for exactly the length of the buffer. Putter turns it on when you start and puts it back the way it found it when the buffer ends, even if you swipe the app away partway through. Repeat callers and anyone on your priority list still get through, so an emergency is not something this swallows. On Android 15 and later it shows up in your settings as its own mode, called Putter, so you can change what gets through.
• The sunrise. Over the last few minutes the screen warms up and the backlight itself comes up, so the phone can sit face down and the room tells you it's nearly over.
• Your note, handed back. When the buffer ends, anything you wrote is offered back so you can send it wherever you keep things. It stays in the pad either way.
• A home-screen widget that starts a buffer in one tap, at the length you used last.
• Clock mode. The same warm screen with no timer and nothing counted, for the rest of the day.

One number
Consecutive mornings you didn't get pulled away. Finish the buffer and one a day counts. Locking the phone and setting it down is fine. Going off into another app for more than 45 seconds means that morning won't count. Miss a day and it starts again at one. No badges and no streak-loss guilt.

What it doesn't have, on purpose
• No account and no sign-in.
• No ads and no subscription. You pay once.
• No reminders and no congratulations. Putter never makes a sound.
• No internet permission. Putter isn't allowed to open a network connection, so it can't send anything anywhere. The only way a note leaves your phone is if you send it.

Putter isn't a treatment for anything and doesn't claim to do anything to your brain. It's an hour with a clock on it.
