EyeCheck: Vision & Color Test

With both eyes open, you rarely notice when one of them gets worse. The better eye quietly covers for it.

EyeCheck is an eye self-check app that tests and records your left and right eye separately. It brings the methods eye clinics use onto your phone screen, and each test takes a minute or two. It is not a one-off score: your history shows whether anything has changed since last month.

■ Vision test (visual acuity)
· Four chart types: Landolt C, tumbling E, letters and picture symbols for kids
· Gets smaller when you are right, bigger when you are wrong — accurate in fewer steps
· Precision mode with 8 directions makes lucky guesses much rarer
· Near vision — the smallest print you can read at book or phone distance

■ Color blind test
· Dot plates whose numbers are generated fresh every time, so they cannot be memorised
· Color arrangement test (D-15) — order 15 colors and see which axis you confuse: red, green or blue
· Color blind filter — separates hard-to-tell colors in your photos, and previews how others with color vision deficiency see them

■ Astigmatism and more eye tests
· Astigmatism — pick the direction that looks blurrier on a radial fan chart
· Contrast sensitivity — how faint the letters can get before you lose them
· Glare — how much you lose next to a bright light
· Amsler grid — mark wavy or missing spots with your finger and compare them with last time
· Red-green (duochrome) — a hint whether your glasses may be too strong or too weak
· Peripheral vision — spot 24 dots at the edge while looking at the centre
· Eye tracking — the front camera checks how smoothly your eyes follow a moving dot
· Full course — run the tests back to back and finish with one summary

· Screen calibration — hold a credit card to the screen once and charts draw at true size
· Automatic distance — the front camera tells you how far you are from the screen
· Voice guidance and volume-key answers — test from two metres away without touching the screen
