About Principles of Philosophy

René Descartes wrote the book Principia Philosophiae (Principles of Philosophy). It is essentially a combination of the Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy. [1] It was composed in Latin, published in 1644, and dedicated to Descartes' long-time acquaintance Elisabeth of Bohemia. In 1647, a French edition (Les Principes de la Philosophie) was published. The book lays out nature's principles—the Laws of Physics—as Descartes saw them. Most significantly, it established the notion that an object's motion will be uniform and along a straight line in the absence of external forces. Newton took this theory from Descartes and included it into his own Principia; it is now commonly referred to as Newton's First Law of Motion. [2] The book was written largely to replace the Aristotelian curriculum that was then in use in French and British institutions. The work is the first fully complete, mechanistic description of the cosmos, and it gives a systematic statement of his metaphysics and natural philosophy.
